THERAPIST IN MIDTOWN MANHATTAN + VIRTUAL IN NYC & NJ
Meet Kendall Bierman, LMHC
A therapist who’s been on both sides of the couch.
I help high-achieving adults who look like they have everything together, but internally feel anxious, overwhelmed, or stuck.
Whether you’re navigating anxiety, substance use, disordered eating, or patterns you can’t seem to break, therapy can help you understand what’s keeping you stuck and build tools to move forward.
Hi, I’m Kendall.
I’m a licensed mental health counselor specializing in anxiety, substance use, and eating disorders.
I primarily work with adults in their 20s and 30s who are used to being in control. They show up, get things done, and keep pushing through — but inside, things feel different.
There may be anxiety, self-doubt, pressure, shame, or coping patterns that don’t feel as helpful as they once did.
Trust me, I know the feeling all too well.
Therapy with me is about understanding why you feel stuck and giving you the tools to actually move forward.
Why I Became A Therapist
I didn’t come into this work by accident.
My own anxiety kept me stuck for a long time, and I didn’t fully understand it at the time. Eventually, it contributed to substance use that pulled me further away from the life I wanted.
Getting sober forced me to learn how to actually live life on life’s terms. I had to learn how to feel things instead of avoiding them, and I had to build tools that actually worked.
That experience shaped how I approach therapy.
I also know how much shame can keep people stuck. It definitely kept me unwell longer than it needed to. That’s why I’m intentional about creating a therapy space where you can be honest about what’s going on without feeling judged.
As someone who has been on both sides of the couch, I know what it’s like to be a client and not know how to move forward.
At the same time, I respect that your experience is your own. My job isn’t to project my story onto you. It’s to understand yours.
You might recognize yourself here
Many of my clients are high-achieving adults who are doing well on the outside, but struggling internally. You may be thinking…
“I keep waiting to feel like I’ve done enough.”
“I overthink almost every decision.”
“I use food/ alcohol / marijuana / work to cope.”
“I’m so hard on myself.”
“I don’t know how to relax.”
“I look successful, but don’t feel okay.”
If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
These patterns don't develop for no reason, and they don't mean there's something wrong with you.
Together, we'll work to understand what's keeping you stuck, build healthier ways of coping, and help you move toward a life that feels more manageable—and more like your own.
How I Work
Clients often describe my style as warm, direct, and non-judgmental.
I’m not just going to sit back and nod. I’ll ask questions, reflect patterns I’m noticing, and gently challenge you when needed. At the same time, I’m always paying attention to your pace and what feels manageable.
-
We understand why.
We’ll look at the patterns, beliefs, emotions, and experiences that may be keeping you stuck.
-
We build practical tools.
You’ll learn strategies to manage anxiety, tolerate emotions, communicate more clearly, and respond differently.
-
We create lasting change.
The goal isn’t just to feel better in session. It’s to take what we’re working on and apply it in your actual life.
My Therapeutic Approach
My work is informed by DBT, CBT, and psychodynamic therapy. In practice, that means we’re not just talking about what’s happening — we’re understanding it, and then figuring out how to respond differently.
-
DBT helps with mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and communication. These tools can be especially helpful when emotions feel intense, relationships feel hard, or coping patterns no longer feel sustainable.
-
CBT helps us understand the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Together, we’ll look at the patterns that keep you stuck and practice new ways of responding.
-
Psychodynamic therapy helps us explore the deeper “why” behind your patterns. This may include early experiences, relationships, shame, fear, or beliefs you’ve carried for a long time.
-
I balance structure with flexibility. I may come in with a direction or framework, but I also follow what you bring in each week so the work stays relevant to your life.
What Therapy With Me Feels Like
Sessions are 45 minutes and structured, but there’s always room to adjust based on what you need that day.
01
We’ll usually begin by checking in on your week—what felt hard, what stood out, and anything that’s been on your mind.
02
From there, we'll decide what feels most important to focus on. Some days we'll spend more time understanding patterns. Other days we'll focus on practical tools. Most sessions include a little of both.
03
Before we wrap up, we’ll usually identify something to take with you—a shift in perspective, something to notice, or a small, realistic change to try during the week.
04
Change doesn’t just happen in session. It happens in the way you start showing up for yourself outside of it.

My Training & Credentials
I'm a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) serving clients in Midtown Manhattan and virtually in New York and New Jersey.
My specialized training includes:
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Intuitive Eating
I specialize in working with adults experiencing the following:
A Little Bit More About Me
Outside of work, I really value having things in my life that feel grounding and enjoyable.
Sobriety gave me the space to explore that. Some of the things I enjoy are: tennis, crocheting, journaling, hiking, video games, and walking my dog.
I also strongly believe that therapists need therapists. My own therapist, along with my friends and husband, help me stay grounded.
Also, a fun fact: I met my husband before I got sober, which is something I like to share because I think it challenges the idea that you need to be the “best version” of yourself to be deserving of or to find love.
We may be a good fit if —
You’re tired of feeling stuck
You want to understand yourself more deeply
You’re looking for both insight and practical skills
You’re open to honest reflection
You want support that is warm, direct, and non-judgmental
You’re ready to create change, even if part of you feels nervous
I may not be the best fit if you need —
Crisis stabilization
Inpatient or residential treatment
Detox or intensive substance use support
A higher level of eating disorder care
Therapy that is purely supportive without challenge or change-oriented work
If another level of care would better support you, I’m always happy to help connect you with trusted resources.
